Details on Consonant Phonetics

On this page I will try to give a short over-view of the consonant sounds that occur in Lhuvan phonetics. Here you find some important information about the phonetic alphabet I use for transcribing.

In Lhuvan there are no so-called "exotic sounds". All sounds are egressive and pulmonic. No ejectives, no implosives and no clicks.

Let's start with the plosives [p b t d k g]. Please note that aspiration is not phonemic in New Common Lhuvan.

/p/ bilabial as in English "pie" /paI/.
/b/ bilabial as in English "buy" /baI/.
/t/ alveolar as in English "tie" /taI/.
/d/ alveolar as in English "die" /daI/.
/k/ velar as in English "kye" /kaI/.
/g/ velar as in English "guy" /gaI/.

Next are the nasal stops [m n N].

/m/ bilabial as in English "ram" /ræm/.
/n/ alveolar as in English "ran" /ræn/.
/N/ velar as in English "rang" /ræN/ or in Quenya "noldo".

Now the fricatives [f v T D s z l S Z C J x g H]

The approximants [w r l L j]

/w/ labio-velar as in English "why" /waI/.

/l/ post-alveolar lateral similar to (but again not the same as) English "lie" /laI/.
[L] velarized post-alveolar lateral similar to English "file" [faIL] or "talc" [tæLk].
